The Most Famous of Peruvian Soccer Players

Recently, Peruvian soccer players has reached notoriety on an international level. Many demonstrate their talent for foreign teams in countries such as Brazil, Spain, Turkey, Mexico, and more. You might have heard names like Christian Cueva and Edison Flores. With so many people from Peru taking to the international field, it’s no wonder that those waiting at back at home are proud of their players and teams.

The Legend

Despite the many Peruvian soccer players making waves, one man stands out. Perhaps the most prominent Peruvian is Paolo Guerrero. Born on January 1, 1984 in Lima, Guerrero began his professional soccer career in the minor divisions of Alianza Lima. He soon rose to the major divisions in 2001. And although he never played an official game, his skills led him to play for German teams Bayern Munich and Hamburg. Eventually he came back to Brazilian team, the Corinthians. He currently plays for Flamengo, another professional Brazilian team.

Paolo Guerrero reached such levels of fame in his home country due to his spectacular performances as a striker. He’s scored more than 200 goals throughout his career. 32 of those were during his time as a member of Peru’s national team. The current members of the team, led by technical director Ricardo Garecca from Argentina, have formed a reliable team. They have demonstrated to the people again and again that they are a new generation of young soccer players with a common dream – to play in the next World Cup in Russia.

Will they make it to the World Cup?

So far, the national team has not lost any of the qualifying games. Out of the five games they’ve played, the team has won three and tied two. These results mean that the national team was fifth overall in the standings and has earned the chance to play New Zealand in the playoffs on November 6 and 14. Keep an eye out for those games!

Paolo Guerrero was crucial to this achievement during the game against Columbia. With just a few minutes left, he got a free kick and scored a goal! This tied the game and allowed the team to play in the playoffs. He returned home as a hero.

As it was vital that he lead the team to play the “repechage” to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, his participation will be of utmost importance to win further games. Everyone, on the team and in Peru, want to make it since it’s been 36 years since their last World Cup. The entire country watches to see what happens next!
